Sherfield Recreation Ground

What a wet week. In August! The weather has played havoc with my football this week after Alresford was cancelled last night followed by road closures denying me a trip to Bournemouth on Tuesday night meaning I hadn’t been a game for FIVE days.

Either way, after last week’s escapades on the pitch for the Vets, I was heading back up the road (just 3 miles up the same road as my house) to Sherfield Rec for game 17 of my season.

Luckily the Vets didn’t have to put up with my below par playing ability for another week, boasting not only a starting 11 but also five players on the bench.

The return of Scottish talisman Eddie Carlin from a two-week holiday filled with Pina Coladas and San Miguel was a welcome boost for the Over 35s.

Michelmersh and Timsbury were in fact short of a few players this week with only two players on the bench and fielding a handful of underage players.

One thing you can guarantee with the Romsey Vets is goals so another six tonight takes my tally up to 86 from 17 games!

Some keen hoppers would class this as another pitch, in two games at Sherfield Rec, I have seen a game on each of the two pitches that the venue has.

The Game

Romsey Town Vets continued their pre season preparations with a comfortable win over neighbours Michelmersh & Timsbury Vets.

Simon De’Ath and Eddie Carlin gave the home side a two-goal lead at the break before De’Ath scored his seventh in two games before a hat-trick from Jamie Brown to round off a convincing score line.

The home side were dominant throughout and Carlin went close to putting Romsey in the lead when he sent his header bouncing off the post.

It didn’t take long for the first goal, clinical frontman De’Ath positioned himself perfectly to tap the ball home after some great play from Andy Fung on the right wing, nutmegging his opponent before putting a low ball into the box for De’Ath.

Romsey were a constant threat and De’Ath nearly added a second with a header straight at the ‘keeper.

Carlin then added a second for the hosts with a low shot into the corner of the net from just inside the area.

With home ‘keeper Ben Wilson having little to do, he was nearly caught off guard, spilling a long range shot onto the post before gathering the ball at the second attempt. That was the closest Michelmersh came in the opening 45 minutes.

It didn’t take long for the scoring to resume in the second half, De’Ath grabbing his second of the evening with a well struck shot from the edge of the box that flew into the top corner despite the ‘keeper getting his fingertips to the ball.

Romsey were in the driving seat and added a fourth through substitute Jamie Brown. De’Ath controlled a long ball from Craig Martin put it into the path of Brown who slotted in past the ‘keeper.

De’Ath and Brown were quite the pairing up front with the De’Ath crossing in for Brown to take the shot on the half volley, cannoning off the underside of the bar and not quite crossing the line.

One comical moment came from a visiting player who picked up the ball on the line for a throw in despite the ball not going out of the play. The referee was quick to blow for handball.

Ben Wilson made a great save to keep a clean sheet when one of the visiting underage players nipped in to latch onto a weak back pass but Wilson covered his near post to block the ball away.

Brown made it 5-0 with little time remaining on the clock when a great ball by Jones on the right wing allowed Brown to head in for his second of the night.

Fung managed to grab another assist in the final minutes to round off a good workout for the veterans when he supplied a short pass inside the area to Brown to complete his hat-trick tapping the ball in at the near post.
